The Kent Muslim Welfare Association (KMWA), based in Gillingham, Kent, is seeking an Executive Imam to lead and inspire our diverse community.
We are looking for a dynamic individual who combines deep Islamic scholarship with modern leadership capabilities. This role is your opportunity to deliver spiritual guidance, develop impactful programmes, and promote social cohesion in a meaningful way.
Leadership Requirements
1. Spiritual Leadership
- Lead daily prayers and deliver inspiring Friday khutbahs that relate Islamic teachings to modern life
- Provide Islamic guidance, personal counselling, and officiate religious ceremonies
- Ensure Islamic knowledge is accessible for all ages
- Follow the Hanafi madhab
2. Community Development
- Support fundraising efforts (mosque development, charity, operations)
- Design initiatives tailored to the evolving needs of the community
- Build interfaith and civic partnerships
- Assist new Muslims and reverts in their learning journey
- Establish programmes for youth, elderly, and sisters
3. Pastoral Care & Welfare
- Offer comfort and spiritual guidance to the ill and bereaved
- Lead Islamic funeral processes and support grieving families
- Set up welfare networks for vulnerable members
- Provide Islamic counselling during crises
4. Strategic Leadership
- Work closely with the Board of Trustees on long-term community vision
- Participate in strategic planning and organisational growth
5. Educational Excellence
- Develop structured Islamic education across all age groups
- Mentor youth and support their spiritual and character development
- Address modern issues through clear, accessible Islamic perspectives
6. Advocacy & Outreach
- Promote a positive image of Islam in the wider community
- Engage in dialogue with civic leaders and media
- Represent the community through various platforms
- Support local and global humanitarian causes
What We Are Looking For
Essential Qualifications
- Formal Islamic education from a recognised institution
- Strong grounding in Quran, Tajweed, Hadith, and Fiqh
- Fluency in English and Arabic (other languages are a plus)
- Proven community development experience
- Effective communication with diverse audiences
- Awareness of the British Muslim context and challenges
- Confident with social media and digital platforms
Desirable Experience
- Skills in conflict resolution and mediation
- Experience in project management or organisational leadership
- Background in youth work or family counselling
- Knowledge of mental health from an Islamic lens
- Experience in interfaith or cross-community work
- Familiarity with fundraising and charitable initiatives
